The workshop takes place in the seminar building right behind the main building of the Humboldt University which is located in the heart of Berlin, on the city’s most famous historic street Unter den Linden. It is next to the famous Maxim Gorki Theater and opposite to the German State Opera House. The Museum Island and the TV tower are just across a bridge and the Brandenburg Gate is a ten-minute walk up Unter den Linden.

General Berlin’s local public transport network consists of city train/urban rail (S-Bahn), metro (U-Bahn), buses and trams. Tickets are valid for all of them, within the city even for the local trains. There are three zones: AB, BC and ABC. You will need an AB or ABC ticket:
  • AB ticket covers the whole Berlin area until the city boundary.
  • Schönefeld Airport and Potsdam are outside of Berlin city boundary, i.e. in the zone C.
There are various types of tickets:
  • short distance tickets — up to 3 urban rail or metro stations (change allowed) and up to 6 bus or tram stations (no change)
  • single tickets (120 minutes, change allowed, no returns or round trips)
  • daily tickets (valid until 3 a.m. of the following day)
  • 7-day tickets
  • and some more
Buying tickets and their validation Tickets can be purchased at multilingual ticket machines on the platforms of S-and U-Bahn stations. In buses, fares are paid to the bus driver, in trams at machines inside the trains. In larger stations the S-Bahn and BVG provide ticket counters. If there is no date-stamp on your ticket, please make sure to validate it by stamping it at the yellow or red boxes on the platforms, in buses or trams. In case of inspection, a ticket that is not stamped is invalid, which results in a large fee. Directions Stops closest to the school location:

Participants are responsible for their own accommodation arrangements. We recommend to start seeking housing as soon as possible. If you are looking for affordable accommodation, you might check out the following options:

Some classes require bringing own tablets or computers, if indicated in the course description. Otherwise, to encourage learning and discussion, the use of phones, tablets or computers is discouraged during class, unless it involves taking notes and referring to writings assigned for the class (in which case all other applications should be closed).

During the school

Attendees will be required to check-in at a registration desk when they arrive onsite.

As we have to check in almost 200 participants, we want to enforce the following rule:

  • If your first course starts Monday, 9 a.m.: Please arrive at the registration desk at 8 a.m.
  • If your first course starts later: Please arrive at the registration desk after 9:15 a.m.

For check-in, you have to present

  • a valid government-issued photo ID (i.e. ID card, Driver’s License or Passport)
  • a print-out of the ticket that you received upon online registration

Badges must always be worn and visible to personnel.

Internet access will be available to attendees for free (no charge). You have to attend to the regulations for computer use at Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin (especially §4.1).
Eduroam
If your university is participating in Eduroam you can access the internet using your account from your home university. This is the preferred way of accessing the Internet.

If you do not have Eduroam, please get a login and password at the Registration Desk.

Please note that sending e-mails from HU network is only possible by using an official mailserver of HU (e.g. mailhost.cms.hu-berlin.de) or a webmailer of your home organisation. Otherwise use a VPN-connection to your home organisation to use other mailservers.

Each course has its own page, which can be accessed via the list of courses. The course page has a link “Course material”, which redirects to a password-protected page. You can find the password in the printed booklet that you will receive at registration.
We have received reports about the password protection not working. This appears to be a known problem of our content management system. To solve it, please empty your browser cache and delete your cookies, then try again. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Lecturers will check attendance to each of the eight sessions of their course. If you have attended at least seven sessions, you are entitled to receive 3 ECTS points.
You can pick up your certificate at the registration desk on Friday, August 16th in the afternoon

During the coffee breaks we will offer coffee, tea, water, fruits and cookies.
Canteen
Participants of a summer school are considered as temporary university members and can eat to the university member price in the refectories. Proof of participation must be presented at the cash registers. You also can purchase a MensaCard for a 1.55€ at the cash registers. The status ‘University Member’ will then be deposited on the card. The cards can be returned at the end of the summer school at each canteen. Credit and pledge are paid directly. Students enrolled in Berlin who have a valid enrollment certificate for a university cooperating with the Studierendenwerk Berlin can claim the student price.

Before you register

The school is suitable for students at bachelor, master and phd level. There is no evaluation process for the participation.
All classes and plenary talks are hold in English.
For each course in which you actively attend at least 7 sessions, you will be assigned 3 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits.
The fee includes the folllowing:
  • Enrollment in up to three courses with 8 sessions of 90 minutes each
  • Participation in science speed geeking
  • Volley tournament
  • Farewell party
Please note that accommodation and lunch is not included.

The DGfS is pleased to be able to offer 15 travel grants of 300,- Euro each. Application is closed now. Candidates were already selected and informed. Preference was given to highly motivated students who do not have access to alternative financial support for participation. The grant will be paid after the (documented) participation in the summer school.

Yes, there is a possibility to present own research. However, instead of a poster session we will organize a science speed geeking in a restaurant, i.e. each presenter gives a 5 minute talk to a small group, after 5 minutes the group moves further on to the next presenter. Presenters are supposed to bring copies of their handouts in A4 format. Further details, e.g. whether there will be a reviewing process in advance, will depend on how much interest will be indicated with the registration. Presenters will be provided with further details in early summer. Anybody is allowed to submit a poster.

You might ask for funding from your home institution.

It is your responsibility to obtain a visa. However, we can send you an invitation letter upon request that will serve as a supporting document that outlines your reasons and duration of stay in Germany. Please let us know your passport number, your date of birth and your gender to be included in the letter.
Please indicate any restrictions and food allergies during the registration process. so that we can take them in consideration with the planning of the science speed geeking event and the farewell party.
We strive to deliver a fully accessible and inclusive event experience for every attendee. We will do our best to help with any specific mobility, vision, hearing or other kinds of accommodations that may be required to help you get the most out of the school. Attendees may request an accommodation during the registration process.
During the courses and the plenary talks we will provide free child care on site in collaboration with the daycare service KidsMobil, which is a partner of Humboldt-University. Please indicate your need and provide details about your children in the registration form.

Photography is permitted in public spaces for generic photos of the overall event, but to protect privacy of all participants consent should be obtained from individuals before their photographs are taken.
Photographs and videos might be taken by the organizers during the event. These will be used for documentation and follow-up reporting. By registering, the participant consents to the use of all images of him or her taken during the event for the aforementioned purposes. By registering, the participant acknowledges understanding that no form of compensation for such usage, monetary or otherwise, will be given.
With your registration, you signed our terms and conditions. In case the website and the terms and conditions PDF document should have contradicting content, the conditions stated in the PDF have preference.
